Acorns & Walnuts
An English proverb states, "Great oaks from little acorns grow." We learned some interesting facts about acorns and walnuts, since we see them quite a bit on our adventures outside. For instance, acorns are a lot of animals favorite snack and therefore not a lot of "acorns" or even pieces of the seed actually make it into the ground to grow into Oak Trees. Another fun fact is that only adult Oak Trees grow acorns, which is what the proverb refers to. This adventure actually occurred in Nana's backyard aka Nana's Forest.
So, in order to make this fall decoration you need the following:
Step Three: Artfully put the pieces into the jar in layers. E was in charge of this part so he did 2 handfuls of acorns and then a piece of red berries (repeat).
Mamaw and Papaw took over this walk in the park to make a super CUTE fall decoration and as a bonus got the boys outside where they love to explore and FIND things! My mini treasure hunters in the making.
- mason jar or equivalent
- red felt
- acorns or walnuts or both
Depending on what look you want you can get these supplies anywhere from the Dollar Tree and Walmart to Target and Amazon. The red berries actually come in different colors to depending on where you go so you can get a different look for your jar.
Step One: Collect acorns and/or walnuts!
Step Two: Cut off sections of the red berries into smaller pieces.
Step Three: Artfully put the pieces into the jar in layers. E was in charge of this part so he did 2 handfuls of acorns and then a piece of red berries (repeat).
Step Four: Cut a square (around 3" by 3" depending on the size jar) for the lid portion of the jar.
Step Five: Place felt over the top of the jar and screw on the lid. Ta-da!
Our final facts that E learned about acorns and walnuts is that the acorn is actually the fruit of the oak tree. It is a nut containing a single seed inside a tough smooth shell. One big difference is that a walnut is a fruit that is eaten and can be used to make oil. Walnut Trees can grow up to 30-130 feet in height!
Most importantly this craft can reflect what is in your own backyard and in addition you can also add embellishments such as ribbon around the lid, but we went with simple beauty! It was a fun and easy craft to make using what we found right in our own backyard.
Ta-da! You have made a very cute fall decoration with supplies from your own backyard or in our case Nana's Forest on a #guentheradventures.
