Hueston Woods State Park

Hueston Woods State Park is more my backyard for my college career. I am actually an Alumna of Miami University of Ohio. When I attended the university many many moons ago, we would visit Hueston Woods and visit the lake portion of the park.

This was the first time we brought the boys to Hueston Woods and while we were still social distancing from other people we didn't see another soul while we were at the park. It was quiet and peaceful. This trip actually will, in my head, be called the rock collection trip because the boys were OBSESSED with finding the coolest rocks and we tried to identify and describe them along the way.We had BIG, tiny, long, and SMOOOOTH rocks. Click here for the worksheet that we read together to learn about the different types of rocks and how to classify them. In addition, to learning about the classification of rocks, E sorted them using these amazing sorting sheets and documented our favorite in our field journal. In our field journal, E documented our TOP TEN FAVORITE rocks. Each rock was assigned three words to describe them and he even tried writing some of the words too.

The classification and sorting worksheets below allowed E to see what different words mean. Big versus small, rough versus smooth, or tall versus short. He was able to label these words to the rocks we found.

On the website for classifying nature sorting sheets, she has some other amazing activities including a "nature table," here as well. For the classifying nature sorting sheets, we ended up laminating them so we could use them again and again with different treasures we find on our #guentheradvenures.

It was fun to travel back to my old stomping ground, Marcus's too, and visit a place that has good memories. Below are pictures taken by my junior photographers. E wanted to jump into the creek too, but it was a cold and chilly day. Maybe we will invest in a wet suit? Or wait for a warmer day?
