Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest
Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest - before I go on if I lived within an hour distance this would be a place I would visit regularly.
Now, I heard about this place through a group on facebook called Cincinnati Hikes (check it out!) and it looked so different and interesting. I mean.. Forest Giants! Although, my little ones called them trolls.
Here is a brief description of the trail-
"Forest Giants Trail - 2 miles - 1.5 hours - Easy
The Forest Giants trail is an out and back trail, one mile each way. It leads from the Visitor Center to see all three of the Forest Giants in a Giant Forest. The first section is flat and mostly paved following along the Olmsted Ponds. The trail then crosses the Big Prairie - a prime spot to see native grasses and other prairie habitat. The final section of the trail is across rougher terrain, winding through parts of our popular Sun and Shade Loop to Lake Nevin, where you’ll see some of our renowned plant collections, including magnolias and the cypress tupelo swamp. Visitors with strollers and other accessibility challenges should allow extra time. Parking is available closer to each of the Giants for those who do not want to hike the full trail. Parts of this trail are exposed to full sunlight, so don’t forget your water and sunscreen on sunny and warm days." from their website tagged below.
On the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest website they list so many other things that are going on as well as the Forest Giants.
Now, there is so much interesting information about the artist that built these giants, but I will let you do some of the research if you are nerdy like me! The artist, Thomas Dambo a webpage as well all about his artwork pieces. It seems he specializes in all things GIANT! (and recyclable).
One of the other things that we really enjoyed were the different types of plants and trees. There were a few trails by the giants that were beautiful. I swear I found a beaver dam, but I could not confirm it. I will definitely find another beaver dam, I would love to see one in person. One of the most beautiful trees we found was a cross species tree that had beautiful big purple blooms.
Bernheim is a beautiful place.
"The Great Story of The Little People & The Giant Trolls
While The Weather Got Better
It was a cold winter, but the snow felt warm
He woke up with eyes closed and heard himself yawn
His name was Isak Heartstone*, on mountain top of them all
A name they gave him as small, now he was 36 feet tall
Still a young giant, only 700,051 years
Already a father to two, full of eyes, full of tears
Full of love he was, but felt alone on the mountain
He walked down to the forest, in the forest he found them
His two beautiful children, little Elina and Nis
And their mama Loumari, a hug and a kiss
They spent the winter together while the weather got better
Elina looked at the sky, from the sky fell a feather
It was a sign of good luck, and a fertile forest
Where every being had a place from the smallest to tallest
They made a circle of life, they would soon have a brother
It’s good luck for a baby, when it sleeps in the mother
Some of wood, some of stone, some of sun, some of seeds
Some of quarts, some of leaves and what fell from the trees
A dragon skull he found 200,000 years ago
It was a symbol of strength, so the baby would grow"

Mama got a picture too. I love that we can go on adventures with family and friends. Life is only as good as the people you surround yourself with and we are surrounded by love and family.
He is my little adventurer. Always looking to explore, learn, and see new things.
It always makes me so happy to see little libraries wherever I go. We have one in our yard... "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him." by Maya Angelou. Take a book, read! #guentheradventures
