Sharon Woods - Gorge Trail

"The Gorge Trail (0.7 miles) is a perfect place to bird watch. There are a variety of woodpeckers that can be seen and heard as they hunt for insects in dead trees. Other common birds include the belted kingfisher, barred owl, white-breasted nuthatch, tufted titmouse and Carolina chickadee.

In 1977, Sharon Woods Gorge was designated as a State Nature Preserve because it contains valuable examples of Ohio’s native plant and animal communities, geological features and the habitats of rare and endangered species.

It is under the protection of the Ohio Natural Areas Act of 1970. While walking through the gorge, you can easily see the alternating layers of shale and limestone rock. This is the same bedrock that is found throughout our area. These fossil filled rocks from the Ordovician period, about 450 million years ago, are quite unstable and are very prone to landslides." information provided by the Great Parks of Hamilton County website.

The reason this hike was so cool is because... it is the LAST day of March and we reached our goal of Hike #20 for the year 2021. We are trying to go on at least 10 hikes each month of a minimum of 1 mile. Small peanuts, but so exciting for us!

The boys wanted to wear their adventure vests and one of the SUPER cool things that you can do on this trail is listen to fun little history bits as you walk. You scan the code with your phone and learn a little bit about what is going on around you as you walk the trail.

One of the reasons this was on the list is because we heard it has a.... waterfall!! As you may know, the boys (and me) LOVE to see waterfalls. They are just so peaceful to listen to and beautiful to look at as well. We were able to see "three" waterfalls.

We also RAN and danced a lot on this trail. I swear I didn't feed them sugar before we went out on the trail, but suddenly they were dancing and running from mom to dad from mom to dad. It was entertaining to watch for us at least. They had fun too.

You will also cross this beautiful wood bridge on the trail. On the bridge we were able to look down into the creek and see DUCKS!

And....

We made it, our final hike of the month and hike #20. We were excited and did a little dance. The boys temporarily fought over the best dance spot which is obviously the cement square, kids I tell ya! Dr. Seuss had never had more wise words as he did when he said, "You’re off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way." We are on our way to the next #guentheradventures
