Lake Loramie State Park

These are the three Best Friends that anyone could have... but really these three are Best Friends Forever - or at least the dads have been friends since they were in elementary school. One of our first trips together with the two families and it was extremely relaxing and enjoyable. Lake Loramie has three cabins available for rent. According to the website, including the 3 cedar cabins which have a loft and separate double bunk bedroom they also have;

"42 sites with full hook-ups, 4 are lakeside and 4 are ADA compliant

120 electric sites; 40 of which are premium sites

15 non-electric sites (Tent camping, only.)

Several sites have boat tie-ups."

It was a decent drive from home and the perfect getaway with friends. The campground has a playground, there are water activities, and our favorite: hiking trails! We were facing the beautiful lake and the view was the first thing we saw when we looked outside in the morning. Sometimes you pick a place with a view!

John Muir said, "Going to the mountains is like going home."

When we headed out on the 6.5 mile trail, which was more than our typical hike, but they handled it like a pro! We turned a corner on the trail and this was the view that we saw. It was just beautiful.

When we go on adventures we don't often bring many toys, but here to what we typically bring:
A truck (like pictured above)
Bikes or scooters
Bucket and Shovel
Card Game or Another Kids Game
Coloring Paper and Crayons
2 cans of playdoh and a small ziplock of playdoh tools

One of the most interesting things that I love finding on trails are all the variety of cool mushrooms and fungi. Nature is cool, and weird. Here is something we learned on this trip. The big white pillowy mushroom is called a puffball mushroom and is actually edible. To be edible it has to be COMPLETELY white, do your research before eating anything out in nature. We saw two whole and one broken apart.

When it is sliced or broken open the best way to describe it is almost like a styrofoam type cheese looking texture. I know, that was the weirdest description ever, but listen.. nature is weird!

Lake Loramie has 8 miles of trails, listed below. We did a combination of two trails making our total trip 5 miles, but we also took a few detours to see some cool sights along the way for a true total of 6.5 miles. I ended up carrying B, but even E was getting tired and had a hard time finishing the last mile. He was a trooper because our average is about 1-4 miles. It helped to be with friends and to bring along snacks, tiny notebook, crayons, and binoculars when we hike with the kids!

Blackberry Island Trail - 1 mile - easy
Lakeview Trail - 2 miles - easy
Little Turtle Trace - 1 mile - easy
Miami-Erie Trail - 1 mile - easy (Part of Buckeye Trail)
Upper Loramie Trail - 2 miles - easy
Portion of the Buckeye Trail - 2 miles - moderate (part of Miami-Erie Trail inside the park)

The weekend we stayed at Lake Loramie was a Halloween weekend; so knowing that we brought our costumes (representing the Cincinnati Zoo) and dressed up as our favorite animals and walk around the campground and did some trick or treating. So much candy!

"If you catch a falling leaf you will have good luck." A friend told us this in passing and now it has become a challenge whenever we are outside. It is harder than you think!

In the late 1880s, English folklore promises twelve consecutive months of good luck and happiness for those who catch 12 leaves in the month of October. In another proverb, it advises it is lucky to catch a falling leaf before it reaches the ground because you will have a happy day or month for each leaf caught. And still another promises a wish comes true for each leaf caught.

In order to cover all bases, I make it a practice to chase and catch as many leaves as I can. Sometimes falling, but always making wishes.

Oh, another staple for #guentheradventures is headlamps for the quests and fun to continue into the night.
